Farm Update: Wintertime Planning and Preparation

News from the Farm

Friends, Neighbors, Eaters,

We hope you are safe, warm, and well-fed.

We wanted to tell you what we've been up to lately, let you know we're hiring, and simply remind you that fresh food is growing right now, even though winter is fully upon us. Thanks for reading, and for eating with us.

Keep your eyes peeled for an annoucment coming soon about 2024 CSA shares!

Winter Project

One of our winter projects has been building a new seedling house. Our previous structure designed for starting flats of seedlings was less than 500 sq feet. The new structure is about 1000 sq ft more.
The additional size will give us more room to work comfortably. It will help us be more organized and streamlined, and help us continue to improve our emphasis on starting healthy vigorous seedlings for transplanting into our beds.

In the past few years, we have shared a mini greenhouse with neighbor & uncle Howdy, in March and April, then moved into an empty bed in a hoophouse, then moved to the upper garden seedling house. The new space will keep the seedling operation in the same site all year round, and close to house, farmstand, buried waterlines and electricity.

The additional size may allow us to do more early greens like shoots and micro greens. Other than some heat mats, we’ve never had a heated greenhouse. We will probably add a heat source to the new space, in the future.

Winter Planning

Our 2023 summer field crew met on the 15th for tacos, beers, icecream, and a chance to digest the season. It was really fun to gather almost everyone together after not seeing most folks for a couple of months. We brainstormed about how the season went and how we can improve- you might enjoy reading through what our team came up with for achievements and disappointments of the 2023 season.

We are excited to take these observations to the next level in 2024- to improve on the disappointments and keep building on the achievements.

We're Hiring!

Looking for a position starting sometime between March and May? Something that is outside, works you physically, and provides delicious food as a perk? We're looking for several folks for the 2024 season.

If you're not the right fit, would you consider forwarding this email to someone who might be?

As always, thanks for eating with us and playing such a crucial role in our food system. ❤

Sara, James, and the THF crew

PS. CSA Shares are not open quite yet- but we'll announce them soon!
