We're feeling the spring changes in earnest here on the farm. And while the ground is covered in white stuff, it truly is spring! Let us count the ways... 1. The greater family has made over 110 gallons of maple syrup up on the hill in the past few weeks. If you see the steam rising from the sugarshack this weekend, come say hi! 2. The crocuses have been blooming in our yard. (They are now covered in snow now, but still...) 3. Spring crops. You've likely noticed the lengthening daylight and the plants have reached that point in winter a few weeks ago where they were finally getting enough daylight not only to survive, but to grow. We have NINE hoophouses full of delicious over-wintered greens (and onions!), with plenty to share with you! Our Spring CSA Shares start on Monday and we have just a few more spots available! 4. Winter projects are coming to an end. We are never are able to complete the full winter-to-do list, but this year, we built a new propagation house, and upped our watering game with hanging hoses, wheeled hose carts and wands. We bet you're noticing the changes too, even though it's been a strange winter. Regardless, we are working to grow food for you in all types of weather (and climate crises!), and welcome you to eat with us this growing season.
Farmstand Opening Soon!
We'll be opening our farmstand doors on April 1st! What products are you looking forward to most? For us, it's just-baked bread, local chicken, raw milk, fresh flower bouquets, and berries. Anything you think we should start carrying in 2024? Let us know!
If a CSA share doesn't work well for you, may we humbly suggest a farmstand share? This is the most convenient way to get lots of fresh, organic veggies all season long. You can shop anytime in our farmstand 8-8 and purchase anything the farmstand has to offer- our vegetables yes- but also frozen meats, dairy, fruit, beverages, prepared foods, canned goods, and much more. Your commitment up front to shopping with us this season helps us stock the shelves now!
We finished our new seedling house! Our previous structure designed for starting flats of seedlings was less than 500 sq feet. The new structure is about 1000 sq ft more. The additional size gives us more room to work comfortably and helps us be more organized and streamlined. Ultimately, it helps us continue to improve our emphasis on starting healthy vigorous seedlings for transplanting into our beds and growing more veggies for you. Yay!
From the Neighborhood
Red Wagon Plants is excited for the 2024 growing season, and hopes you are, too. On March 30th they will be hosting an Open House where you are invited to stroll through greenhouses and see what's growing... chase the winter blues away with a hit of green life! Red Wagon will open for the season two weeks later, on April 12th. That evening, they'll celebrate with music, food and drinks during their opening day party! This year, they have new offerings that they are looking forward to sharing: Coffee and treats made in our very own kitchen, full day learning events with workshops and free activities. Check out their website at www.redwagonplants.com for more details!
Seeking: Farm Truck
We realize this is a shot in the dark, but we could use another farm truck. Anyone have something they are looking to sell? Much can be wrong with it- it doesn't even need to be inspectable! We're Just looking for something to drive up and down the hill on the farm. It is important that 4WD is working to make it useable for us, and shouldn’t be leaking fluids. We don’t have much in the budget, but maybe you’ve got just what we need?
For now, we're making this little buggy work hard for us!
Thanks for reading! And as always, thanks for eating with us and playing such a crucial role in our food system. ❤
Sara, James, and the THF crew
PS. We have only 3 spots left in our Spring CSA shares and about 25 available in our Growing Season (Summer) Shares. Wewelcome you to join us for weeks of bountiful, clean, delicious, and convenient veggies. Farmstand Shares and Good Meat Club shares are still available too. Reserve a share here.
